Re-keying (changing) a lock is the process of replacing the tumblers (pins, pin tumblers) of a lock cylinder with other tumblers of different sizes. The lock will then require a different key to operate. The new key will coincide with the new tumblers and the old key will no longer work. In other words, it is not necessary to buy new locks. Re-keying locks is something that should be done if you have moved into a new residence or lost a set of keys.

A fresh installation is necessary to prepare a door to receive a lockset. If you have an existing lock installed and just need to replace it, you may not need any drilling done to the door, unless the new lock you want to install has a different measurement than the existing one. The fresh installation is used when adding a lock to a door for example. So you will need the door to be drilled in order to install that lock.
