Re-key doors in house

Re-keying (changing) a lock allows you to use new keys on your existing locks. If you have moved into a new residence or lost a set of keys, your can re-key your locks and avoid the expense of replacing the knobs and deadbolts. Re-keying involves replacing the tumblers (pins, pin tumblers) of a lock cylinder with other tumblers of different sizes. The lock will then require a different key to operate. The new key will coincide with the new tumblers and the old key will no longer work. Locksmiths typically charge to re-key locks based on the number of cylinders in the lock. To count the number of cylinders you have, simply count the number of slots where you can insert your key.

$25.00/ cylinder
Replace door knob: Labor+hardware $35.00/ knob
Home keys made $12.00/ key
Deadbolt replaced: Single cylinder

Current general liability insurance

The locksmith you hire should carry both general liability & workers compensation insurance. If the locksmith damages your property or harms you or someone else, their liability insurance should cover the cost of these damages. This insurance can be expensive and some service providers may be tempted to avoid the expense by letting insurance lapse. Since insurance can expire or be cancelled, you should always verify this information yourself.

Current worker comp. insurance

The locksmith providers you hire should carry both general liability & workers compensation insurance, which provides for workers medical bills and lost wages if they happen to be injured on the job. This insurance can be expensive for the locksmoth. Some businesses may be tempted to avoid the expense by letting insurance lapse. For this reason, you should always verify that the service provider has a current insurance policy.
